Where is Kendall?

Kendall neighborhood in Miami Florida

***

If you’ve ever visited the Killian Palms Country Club or indulged in retail therapy at The Falls, you’ve touched a part of Kendall. But there’s so much more to it, and I’m here to give you the inside scoop.

Located in the southwestern part of Miami-Dade County, Kendall is a suburban community that’s a stone’s throw from downtown Miami. Yet, Kendall offers a unique charm that’s all its own. Depending on where you’re starting in Kendall, we’re talking about a mere 10 to 15 miles from downtown. So, yes, you get the best of both worlds: suburbia’s serenity and city life’s excitement.

Kendall’s Community Spirit

One of the things that sets Kendall apart is its undeniable community spirit. If you’ve ever been to Kendall, you’ll know what I’m talking about. If not, let me paint a vivid picture for you.

In Kendall, the Summer Fest at Tropical Park is a family favorite, filled with games and live music. At the same time, food enthusiasts eagerly await the Food Trucks Fridays Fiesta. Every 3rd Saturday, the Bird Road Art District Walk comes alive, showcasing local artists and craftsmen. Don’t forget the West Kendall Farmers Market, a treasure trove of fresh produce and handcrafted items. But Kendall’s vibrancy doesn’t stop there. With continuous events like the Kendall Book Club and the Kendall Run Club, it’s clear that this community’s spirit is unmatched. If you’re seeking a neighborhood that’s perpetually alive with activity and brimming with community camaraderie, Kendall is your destination.

Kendall is a Kid’s Paradises

On the list are numerous kid-friendly venues sprinkled throughout Kendall. Places like Kendall Ice Arena offer a cool escape from Miami’s heat. In contrast, the Jumpin’ Jamboree is perfect for those days when the little ones have energy to burn.

Another standout in our community is Off The Wall – a fantastic indoor amusement park that offers a range of activities from trampolining to arcade games in an accommodating environment for children with special needs. Whether it’s a birthday party or a family outing, places like Off The Wall ensure every child feels included.

Kendall’s Green Spaces: Parks, Play, and More

Kendall Indian Hammocks Skatepark

***

If there’s one thing we can all agree on, Kendall is blessed with some of Miami’s most beautiful parks and recreational spaces. Today, I want to dive deeper and highlight those unique nooks and corners that make our parks welcoming, especially for our kiddos on the autism spectrum.

In Kendall, play areas are a highlight. Take Kendall Indian Hammocks Park, where the playground boasts sensory-sensitive equipment, from soft surfaces to gentle swings, ensuring that children with special needs can play without feeling overwhelmed. This thoughtfulness extends to other parks like Kendale Lakes Park and Westwind Lakes Action Sports Park. Whether you’re enjoying a picnic or a day at the skate park, Kendall’s commitment to inclusivity shines through, with quiet zones and sensory-friendly activities ensuring every child feels welcomed and celebrated.

And it’s not only about play areas. There’s something for everyone, from art classes at West Kendall Regional Library to therapeutic horseback riding sessions at Bonanza Equestrian Center. These programs aren’t just fun; they’re instrumental in helping kids develop social skills and build confidence.

Miami-Dade Parks’ Adaptive Sports Programs

If you’re looking for athletic programs tailored for your special needs kiddos, you’re in for a treat. Kendall has Adaptive Sports Programs offered by Miami-Dade Parks. These programs enhance motor skills, foster social interaction, and instill a love for sports.

One of their standout programs is their swimming initiative. I’ve heard numerous parents gush about the leaps and bounds their kids have made, both in their swimming prowess and their overall confidence. It’s heartwarming to see our children conquer the waters and their fears!

Arts & Crafts: Children can explore their creative side with diverse arts and crafts projects.

Sports and Fitness: Scheduled recreation time allows kids to engage in physical activities and develop social skills. The sports roster includes baseball, basketball, cheerleading, flag, and tackle football.

S.T.E.M. Activities: A certified teacher introduces young minds to the wonders of science, technology, engineering, and math in the on-site lab.

Retail Therapy Right Around the Corner

The Falls Shopping Mall

***

Whether you’re in the mood for high-end retail therapy or need to pick up the weekly groceries, Kendall’s got you covered. Dadeland Mall and Whole Foods Market are 2 of the shopping hubs where you can find everything from designer boutiques to your favorite organic produce.

Now, onto something close to my heart: businesses that cater to our autism community. The local A.M.C. Theatres host sensory-friendly film screenings, ensuring everyone can enjoy a day at the movies without stress. It’s these thoughtful touches that make Kendall’s businesses stand out.

Public and Private Schools in Kendall

Kendall Lakes Elementary School

***

Let’s take an educational journey through my beloved Kendall. Whether you’re new to the area, considering a move, or curious about the exceptional student education, this one’s for you.

***

Exceptional Student Education

Kendall boasts some of the top-rated public schools in Miami-Dade County. But what truly stands out is their commitment to Exceptional Student Education (E.S.E.). Schools like Kendall Lakes Elementary and Devon Aire K-8 Center have been lauded for their classrooms’ specialized E.S.E. services. Seeing educators go above and beyond to create an environment where every student is valued is heartwarming.

Private Autism Schools in Kendall

STARS Autism School

***

Switching gears to private schools, Kendall doesn’t disappoint. Kendall has institutions like The Carrie Brazer Center for Autism and S.T.A.R.S. (Support The Autism Road to Success) School, which specifically cater to students with autism. These schools offer smaller class sizes, individualized learning plans, and therapies integrated into the daily curriculum. It’s not only about academics; it’s about ensuring students are equipped with life skills and social competencies.

Kendall’s Commutes and Transportation

Let’s talk about something we all deal with daily: getting around town. Whether you’re a daily commuter, a parent on school runs, or someone trying to get to the local grocery store, understanding Kendall’s transportation options is essential. So, let’s break it down.

Public Transportation Options: While Miami-Dade County offers public transportation options, Kendall’s coverage isn’t as dense as downtown. Kendall has reliable bus routes, but they might not always be the most convenient for where you’re headed. If you’re near the Metrorail, it’s an excellent option for heading downtown or to the University of Miami. But again, it’s all about location.

Actual Traffic Conditions and Peak Hours: Morning rush hours (think 7-9 AM) and evening (around 4-7 PM) can be particularly congested, especially on main roads like Kendall Drive, Bird Road, and the Palmetto Expressway. If you can, try to plan your outings outside these hours. And if you’re new to the area, trust me, you’ll get the hang of the traffic patterns soon enough.

You’ll Probably Need a Car: Here’s the candid truth – Kendall’s sprawl makes having a personal vehicle essential. Plus, it offers the flexibility to move around on your schedule. While Kendall provides transportation options, having a car is often the most practical choice. Safe travels, neighbors!
